Anyone have any recommendations on whether I should go Ubuntu or Mint? If so, why?
I want something that I can play MC on, and probably run some other small things through wine.

One of my friends from Germany called me for the first time in a while, and we talked a little bit about his computer.
He said that his computer was lagging like a pile of shit burning in the depths of hell, so he switched to Linux.
The lag on his machine doubled.

Windows 8 runs minecraft as well as windows 7.
For the Linux performance issue, Linux graphics drivers are nowhere as good as windows, but it's still very playable with a quite good framerate. I personally have 200 fps on windows and about 160 on linux. But again, Linux isn't the most user friendly operating system, and you will probably feel a bit lost if you've never used it. I'd probably not recommend it to you.
Also Killgun, please don't talk about what you have nowhere no knowledge of, it only makes you look stupid.

For the distro choice, I prefer Mint over Ubuntu simply because of the user interface that is way more customizable and way less clunky and ugly. There's no big other difference since Mint is based on Ubuntu.

Windows 8 worked perfectly fine on my 8 year old machine, don't spout Bull. Windows 8 performs just as well as windows 7, if not better.

You have to install graphics drivers on windows 8 to play minecraft. And many times u won't find any drivers
