When your hungry your character dies Too slow especally if you are wearing armor. So if you would like to make it better I would suggest:

1. Whenever a person starts to starve with no hunger bars a timer starts to tick from 10 seconds, if the player do not eat within 10 seconds he will die. This timer can be increased by leveling herblism skill up!

2. When a player starts to starve with no hunger bars He takes one whole heart per tick plus gets a debuff of slowness 4, weakness 5, Nausea 1. When you are hungry in real life you don't got energy to do anything so this would make sense.

3. Every 5 seconds the player slows down and lose health over time.

Im planning on adding new food, and food related things, to work with the new crop systems. There may be some small tweaks to hunger and similar things. I like the idea of the weakness and slowness with certain levels of hunger, to make players eat more, but i'll need to think about it a fair bit more and make sure it works properly.

Making players die after 10 seconds is extreme and would cause a lot of players to eventually go "Why did I just die from hunger I had a lot of hp left". Making the damage caused by hunger grow exponentially with time would be cooler in my opinion, and it gives the players a heads up a lot better.
