I used the Windows 8 Developer preview for months and everything was working perfectly out of the box.

Guess what? I'll be gone for a bit again. Something happened again, but,

I figured out what the problem with my computer was. My shitty Ikea desk falls apart occasionally, bringing it tumbling down onto my computer case. The computer is generally fine, since the case could probably take a bullet, but one time or another it knocked the CPU and heatsink ajar, not enough for me to notice when taking a quick peak inside though. I'm getting more thermal paste to fix it, should be back soon, unless I screw it up.

Doing a necro post here, since I thought everyone should know. I'm going to be gone for the next week, and then be back for a week, then be gone another two weeks.

I want something that I can play MC on, and probably run some other small things through wine.
It really depends on whether you can tolerate Unity, or perfer Cinnamon or MATE desktop environments (DE). Unity and Cinnamon require better hardware than MATE, but I doubt you would notice any performance decrease with either. Mint is based on Ubuntu, so you have access to the same repos. If you have a large screen and want to give Unity a try, I suggest Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, otherwise Mint with the MATE DE is my favorite. You'll be able to play MC on either distro. If you want to be hardcore, try Arch Linux.

WHATEVER YOU DO, NEVER switch to Linux or Windows 8.
W8 can't run MC, and Linux is the shitbag of the century.

One of my friends from Germany called me for the first time in a while, and we talked a little bit about his computer.
He said that his computer was lagging like a pile of shit burning in the depths of hell, so he switched to Linux.
The lag on his machine doubled.

By the way, found a funny comic about fixing computers: http://theoatmeal.com/blog/fix_computer" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Chances are your friend didn't install the proprietary driver for his video card. Generic video drivers are usually what cause FPS issues; that, and unsupported graphics chips. Linux is much better today than it has been in the past. Not to insult your friend, but most people have no idea how to properly configure Linux for their machine.

Linux is not a shitbag. It's pretty good, unless you go with like Fedora or CentOS, which are the 2 worst GNU+Linux OS ever created. Fedora is bleeding edge, and CentOS is just glitchy as hell. Go with Ubuntu or Red Hat for GOOD Linux OS.

CentOS is a brilliant operating system for server boxes. Of course you shouldn't be using it for everyday uses, its an enterprise class OS.
