Area reset when returning from the nether

I had a bunch of chests marked as private in a mine I was in and I built a portal to the nether nearby, after I went through I came back about 5mins later and all the chests were gone and the area was reset to how it was before I came through. Any help for getting my stuff back or preventing this in the future would be appreciated.
