Many players have wanted this, especially the older players (because most new players don't even know that the command '/pickup' exists), but I just had some brilliant ideas for this.
So the point is, /pickup currently disables any item (and XP orb) pickup if you toggle it. I personally use it a lot to prevent picking up items I really don't need.
The idea would be to open a menu when you type /pickup. In that menu, every block or item (or XP orb) you have interacted with within the last 5 minutes (because if every existing item would be in the list, it would be way too big) will appear (an image of the item plus its name). Next to the images would be small cubes you could toggle (like in the achievements menu). Crossing a block would mean you will NOT pick up that specific block or item when it's on the floor. All the ones you didn't cross will still be picked up.
This would make it easy, for example, when you're mining and you only want to pick up minerals (iron ore, redstone, coal, diamonds, gold and lapis lazuli) and you don't want to pick up useless blocks because otherwise your inventory would get filled real quick (stone, grass, dirt, treasures from the dirt, gravel, etc.).
Another example would be a zombie grinder: you only want to pick up the XP orbs (to get higher levels obviously) but you don't need their carrots, iron ingots, rotten flesh, etc.

This is a brilliant idea, I agree i have thought to put /pickup on, when mining, but then i might not pick up my ore, rob has easily came up with a solution to this.
